Abyss currently consists of nine members from seven countries, with a wide range of technical and interpersonal skills. Our team strives to provide students an opportunity to develop their skills in a practical way, while providing them the satisfaction of seeing their individual contributions. Our goal is to create an experience where students enjoy the time they spend on the project, and look back on their effort with pride. We also have an ambitious mission to innovate in technologies integral to submersible function. Our proofs-of-concepts will one day hopefully open the scientific community to new ways of approaching ocean exploration.
The Electronics and Control team works to deliver the submersibles circuitry, microcontroller programming, and signal processing. They do excellent work with our control loops, sensor integration, electrical connections, and power supply. In addition to these contributions, members get the opportunity to develop skills in workshop techniques and frequent work in the lab.
The Structure team is responsible for all of our submersibles physical design. Working with a multitude of design tools for scultping, stress testing, and manufacturing, Structure handles a wide range of tasks. Beyond digital tools, members also get a chance to test the physical response of the submersibles body in the lab. Water proofing is another significant task undertaken by our structure team, ensuring all of our components stay happy and dry.
The phase transition team covers the wax properties and system thermodynamics. They are the center of our material sciences work. The properties of phase change materials (PCM) are their main focus. Most of the work focuses on experimentation of PCMs and the integration of wax with its surrounding systems. They also create all of our thermodynamic models to help better understand the energy requirements of the system.
Public Affairs manages all of Abyss' non-technical operations. Finances, event planning, recruitment, and branding all fall under their umbrella. They also take care of the teams partnerships and external contact, building good relationships with the people in their network. Public Affairs offers their members a chance to depart from the standard engineering practices of their programs for a more creative work environment. Abyss owes much of their creative expression and unique personality to them.
